The headlines about social care are rarely quiet. We often hear about the challenges around workforce shortages, funding pressures, and growing demands. But behind those headlines are real people, real experiences, and real stories that don’t always get the space they deserve.
That’s why we’ve launched Shift Happens: a new podcast from The Care Workers’ Charity (CWC) and Flourish. Because while the sector is often talked about in terms of “issues”, we believe it’s time to focus on the people behind them.
Shift Happens brings together the CWC team, frontline care workers and sector experts, to talk honestly about life in social care – the realities, the challenges, and the stand-out moments.
Hosted by Pete Humphreys, Head of Partnerships at Flourish, each episode creates space for open, reflective conversations. Across the series, we’ll explore some of the most talked-about topics in social care, from workforce pressures and crisis support to policy, pay, and what real change actually looks like in practice. But more importantly, we’ll explore the human side of those topics; what they feel like, how they show up day-to-day, and why they matter.
Shift Happens – Episode 1: The State of Care
The first episode, launched today, features Karolina Gerlich, CEO of The Care Workers Charity. It looks at the state of care today, reflecting on what’s changed in recent years – and what hasn’t.
Shift Happens is for anyone connected to social care. Whether you’re working on the frontline, leading a service, supporting a team, or simply interested in the future of the sector, this podcast is for you.
Ultimately, our hope is simple: that Shift Happens helps shine a light on the real voices behind the headlines. The ones who understand the complexity of care not as a concept, but as a daily experience.
