Fostering And Birth Children Course

This course is written to assist foster carers and potential foster carers, in better understanding the impact of the whole process of fostering upon their birth children.

Given that looked after children will frequently present with very specific needs due to past trauma, it is easy for birth children to be inadvertently overlooked.

Some birth children may feel puzzled by the processes that looked after children go through, including what can appear to them as very different approaches in parenting styles.

This course will cover:

• Preparing birth children to be part of a fostering family
• Fostering from a birth child's perspective and how to prepare them
• The challenges of fostering for both younger birth children and for adult birth children
• Balancing the needs of birth children with those of 'looked after children in placement
• The impact of loss when children leave the foster home

• Understand the overall experience of having a foster sibling and the positive aspects of fostering
• Understand the challenges of fostering for both younger birth children and for adult birth children
