Permanency Course

Permanency depends on securing the right solution for the right child at the right time. It is important for children to have a sense of security, continuity, commitment and identity through childhood and beyond.

This course considers what is meant by permanency and the impact on outcomes for children and young people. The various options of achieving permanency are explained and the differences between these options explained

This course will cover:

• Considering what is meant by the term ‘permanency’
• Exploring different legal options of achieving permanency for looked after children
• Exploring how foster carers can become permanent families for children and young people
• Considering the differences between adopting the child in your care, becoming a Special Guardian for that child or remaining permanent foster carers.

By the end of this course you will know how:

• To provide foster carers considering permanence for children in their care information, guidance and advice on the best possible options available to them
• To give an overview of legal differences in permanent options
• To provide carers with an opportunity to reflect on how the various permanency options might impact on the child or young person
• To consider the implications for the carer's extended family

This Permanency course has been designed specifically for people who work within Children's Services. However, it will also be useful to a wider audience of people who would like to know more about being a Guardian, Foster carer or considering adoption.
