Course overview of Self-Harming Behaviours
Self-harming behaviour is a way for some people to cope with difficult situations. Furthermore, children and young people can exhibit self-harming behaviour for a number of reasons. This also includes traumatic experiences in their past, a way of coping with abuse, or to help them deal with current pressures in their life.
Moreover, self-harming behaviour can take a variety of forms, encompassing eating disorders, cutting, substance misuse and overdoses. It can also involve engaging in extreme behaviour such as excessive exercise. Therefore, because self-harming behaviour is a coping mechanism, children and young people who self-harm will require sensitive support from professionals in order to overcome it.
Children and young people who display self-harming behaviour present a particular challenge to the children’s workforce. Therefore, this course enables learners to understand why young people develop maladaptive behaviours and enables them to learn how they can work more safely and effectively with children and young people who harm themselves.
