Staying Put Course

‘Staying Put’ is the widely used phrase for discussing how looked after children can remain in care with their foster carers, until the age of 21.

Moreover, the government Children and Families Act 2014 legislation aims to support looked after children. It's called Staying Put. Furthermore, this important legislation clarifies arrangements for care leavers.

Furthermore, this course explains the legal obligation for local authorities to support and facilitate the Staying Put arrangements. Which allows young people to stay in care until 21.

Young people leaving care at the age of 16-18 may have already experienced multiple broken attachments, an arrested development and also a lack of reassurance and guidance. Therefore access to comprehensive, consistent and age-appropriate support is essential in paving the way for a future of opportunity and stability for them.

This course will cover:

• Core legislation, regulations and strategy guidance
• Relevant information for foster carers regarding Staying Put arrangements and planning transitions
• The importance of the Pathway Plan for care leavers
• Who the Staying Put Arrangement 2014 applies to and the rationale behind it
• The role of the Foster Carer who has converted to a Supported Lodgings Carer under Staying Put, including the differences, similarities and responsibilities
• Development of skills for independent living
• Planning transitions into adulthood
• Financial support for Staying Put Carers
• Safeguarding

By the end of the training, you will:

• Understand the ‘Staying Put’ Arrangement 2014, who it applies to and understand the relevant guidance and legislation
• Know about the Local Authority and Independent Foster Care provider's policies for Staying Put Arrangements and their advice, support and monitoring practices
• Understand the role of the foster carer, transitions into adulthood, work, housing, health and financial support
• Know the appropriate Safeguarding regulations applicable for young people who are remaining in homes under the Staying Put Arrangement

This Staying Put course is for people who want to know more about how to provide consistent and age-appropriate support for young people in care, from the ages of 16 to 21.

Whilst it provides a focus for people working in Children's Services, it will also be useful to a wider audience of people who would like to know more about supporting young people within this age range.
