Course overview of Trauma And The Impact On Brain Development
Fostering is not an easy thing to do. Children who come into care have often experienced traumatic events in their past which impact on their brain development. Due to their early life trauma children who are looked after can have more emotional and mental health needs, as well as more behavioural difficulties than most children. Their difficulties usually start before they become looked after. Understanding how this trauma impact the development of the brain allows us to understand the resulting behaviours.
We know that foster care which offers stability, security and a good relationship can help children and young people to develop and mature emotionally and can repair some of the damage that has been done and be an integral part of the healing process.
