Youth Justice System Course

Youth Justice is for young people who have broken the law. The youth justice system attempts to give young people an opportunity to change their lives for the better. This course explains the procedures that are followed within the Youth Justice System, risk factors and ways to support young people to help prevent re-offending.

This online training covers why children and young people are vulnerable to engagement in offending behaviour and how to reduce the risk of criminalisation.

We look at how youth justice operates, how the court system works and how you can work in partnership so you can apply this knowledge in your role.

This course will cover:

• Why young people may offend and key theories of youth offending
• Factors that increase vulnerability to offending behaviour
• Protective factors, restorative justice and crime prevention
• The risks of criminalising behaviour and how to reduce it
• Effective behaviour management strategies that prevent escalation
• Key agencies involved in the youth justice system
• The practitioner’s role when working with children involved in youth justice
• Assessment approaches and contributing to holistic care planning
• Police involvement procedures and organisational policies
• Youth courts, sentencing processes and disposal options
• Supporting young people to comply with court outcomes and reducing breaches
• Different types of secure settings and risks for young people
• Approaches that improve outcomes in secure environments
• Challenges when moving between secure settings and returning to the community
• Supporting successful resettlement into the community

By the end of the training, you will be able to:

• Recognise why children and young people in care may be vulnerable to offending behaviour
• Identify factors that place young people at risk of offending
• Reduce the risk of criminalisation of children and young people
• Understand the roles of key agencies within the youth justice system
• Explain how partnership working supports effective youth justice practice
• Describe the youth court system and sentencing process
• Support children and young people in secure settings and during resettlement in the community

This course has been designed specifically for people working with children and young people. Whilst it provides focus on residential settings, it will also be useful to a wider audience of people who would like to know more about the youth justice system. The training course provides content to support qualification units relating to residential childcare.
